“Mustangs and Madras’ self-titled seven song album has a refined, thoughtful sound, which is surprisingly polished for this Denver five-piece who just recently started to play at clubs. Nick Krier sings his heart out sounding a bit like Fugazi -era Ian MacKaye, and when he’s not singing he plays counter-point on sax, especially noticeable on “Ides.” Nick is not alone with the microphone; everyone else in the band sings as well, except Colin the drummer who is too occupied with time changes and a maddening amount of fills. Mustangs like big breakdowns and bridges, often with the sax featured prominently. Then, it’s right to the rocking as the whole band comes together with hammering skins and brilliant guitar interplay. What sets this band apart from the other countless screamo bands in Denver is, at the core, pure talent. When listening to “The Auction” it’s plain that not only is Mustangs and Madras’ album incredibly tight, they are also collectively writing songs that are more complex and more mature than 90 percent of the bands you’re likely to hear on South Broadway on a Friday night. Why listen to outsiders when seeing this local band is so rewarding?” – The Yellow Rake
