ABOUT
Look. Here’s the deal. IfIHadAHiFi are full of a bunch of bitter, pissy assholes who play loud, unlistenable cacophany with a dance beat and have been doing so since 2000. There’s a very good chance your band has played with them. There’s also a very good chance that when you played with them, they were talking shit about your band because they think you suck. That’s what they do. They also hurt themselves, each other, and their instruments. A lot. The kids love them and girls want to hop on their cocks. Don’t believe it? Fucking believe it, because our girlfriends are hotter than yours, your girlfriends wish they were ours, and hell, *you* probably wish you were ours
Nada Surf EP+3
IfIHadAHiFi tend to approach recording the same way they approach live performance—
with a complete and utter disregard for their instruments, personal safety, and the safety
of their listeners (or their hearing, at the very least). One thing no one can accuse the HiFi
of is holding back; each song is delivered with an unbridled, balls-out intensity that would
make most “hardcore” bands blanch. Anyone can play a song, but not everyone can put
themselves through the wind-sprint endurance tests that IfIHadAHiFi’s sets (and records)
consist of.
IfIHadAHiFi (currently comprising Dr. Awkward [drums], Mr. Alarm [bass], Yale Delay
[guitar], & Rev. Ever [synth, guitar]) have been active since the year 2000, and have
released 3 1/2 albums to an ever-increasing amount of critical acclaim. Most recently,
their protest song “Imperial Walker,” commenting on the absurd actions of Wisconsin’s
newly elected governor, drew press from outlets as diverse as Buddyhead.com and the
National Review. They’ve toured the U.S. multiple times, and are currently setting their
sights on Europe and Japan.
Their new release, the Nada Surf EP (its title a response to the titular band’s use of the
name If-I-Had-AHiFi for the title of their latest record) and its three bonus tracks retain the
aggressiveness of past recordings, while upgrading their melodic sensibilities on songs
such as “Spy in the House of Fuck” and the intense yet poppy “Arson, You Let Me Down.”
Fear not, however—their trademark feedback, howling synthesizers, and frenetic
drumming are still front and center, as exemplified by tracks such as “Minotaur
Documentation” as well as the EP’s opener, “We Fiddle, You Burn.”
Both records (as well as a digipack CD version comprising all tracks from the vinyl plus the
aforementioned “Imperial Walker”) will be released by Milwaukee-based label Latest Flame,
who also released the HiFi’s previous album Fame By Proxy.
Buy their record. Come see them. Hell, take them out to dinner. You’ll like it, and so will
they. It will be well worth your while, believe me.
